Being stressed doesn’t always mean that you should be depressed or anxious. In fact, stress isn’t always bad. A bit of it even helps in staying focused. This is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation and alerts you to prevent workplace mistakes. But after a certain limit, this stress can be hazardous for you, as well as for your employer. Closing deadlines, increasing demands, and long working hours act as catalysts, and when this stress exceeds the ability to cope, it becomes harmful.

- Feeling irritated, or depressed
Do you always feel low because of something that happened at work? Or do you get irritated very easily when things don’t go your way? If the answer is ‘yes,’ then you might be suffering from workplace stress. Being depressed or anxious over a prolonged period due to your work can mean you’re stressed, but if your sorrow lasts a day or two, or if the reason for it isn’t your work, then it might not qualify as ‘workplace stress.’
Sometimes, there can be a loss in interest while working. And if you’re feeling the same for a long duration, this could mean you’re stressed. There can be plenty of other reasons apart from stress for this, like inability to understand the procedure, or wanting to work in some other domain, but if you continue to face this issue, you might eventually become stressed.
- Insomnia and Fatigue
While working if you have ever felt exhausted, it could mean workplace stress. There can be muscle pains or headaches along with tiredness. This happens mainly because of lack of concentration and interest in the work. Insomnia, or sleeplessness can also be an evident reason for being stressed. Sometimes, even the digestive tract gets affected due to this.
- Social withdrawal
Withdrawing from social or family life can also be a great indicator of workplace stress. Sometimes, you get too engrossed in your work, that you tend to withdraw from the society, which is a positive sign as it shows that you are dedicated to your work. However, excess dedication can lead to social disengagement, which can ultimately lead to depression or anxiety.
- Using alcohol or drugs to cope
This happens mostly when you know that your work stresses you out, but you don’t know what to do about it. So finally, you resort to alcohol or drugs as they might help you forget about your work. However, substance abuse might take your focus off the work momentarily, it will certainly trigger your stress level even more.
